Shaping the future

Thermal batteries are becoming the preferred solution for air, space and defense reserve power systems. What is not known is the extensive field of research related to thermal batteries. Some of our R&D focus areas involve understanding of physical phenomena, enhanced methods of design optimization, experimental and computational tools, new material for anode (lithium derivatives), cathode (new sulfides more thermally stable than pyrite, etc.) and electrolyte (new binders, salts), new manufacturing techniques for thinner cell production and designs for thermal insulation. Our ultimate goal is of course improving the performances of thermal batteries.

The extensive use of the ETHER electro-thermal model enables predictive & comparative analysis, not only in the frame of the development of battery designs but also in innovative concepts of battery architecture and long life batteries.

ATB has another R&D focus area: thin film technologies and conformal batteries. Our targets are size reduction of traditional batteries, development of very small and miniature batteries and cost reduction through industrialization of new low cost processes.
